Google Maps arrival alerts vs a real stop alarm
Google Maps can tell you when you are close. Whether it can wake you is a different question. An honest comparison of what each one does.
Google Maps can tell you when you are approaching your stop, and it is free. What it sends is a notification, which means it makes no sound on Silent, can be suppressed by Focus, needs an active route and a data connection, and arrives as one short chime. If you are awake, that is enough. If you are asleep, it is not.
Both things can be true: Maps is a better navigator, and it is not an alarm.
What Google Maps actually offers
Two features get confused with each other.
Transit alerts during a route. When you are following a transit route, Maps can notify you as your stop approaches, and it will tell you which exit or transfer to take. This is genuinely good and it is the feature most people mean.
Location sharing and arrival notifications. A separate feature that tells someone else you have arrived. Not relevant here, but it is why search results for "Google Maps arrival alert" are confusing.
The transit alert is the comparison worth making.
The three limits
It is a notification. This is the important one. iOS routes notification sounds through the ringer and alert level, which the silent switch mutes and Focus modes filter. Audio an app plays while running goes through the media level instead, which the switch does not touch. The full explanation is here, and it is not a small detail: it is the difference between a sound that plays and one that does not.
It needs the route running. The alert belongs to an active navigation session. If you closed Maps, if the route ended because the app lost your position underground, or if you never started a route in the first place and are just riding a line you know, there is no alert to receive.
It needs data. Routing is a server product. On a rural coach route, in a tunnel, or abroad without roaming, the thing that was going to tell you where you are is the thing that stops working first. Note that GPS itself keeps working, because GPS is a receiver, not a connection. It is the routing around it that needs the network.
What Maps is better at
Worth being straight about this.
- Actual navigation. Which line, which platform, which exit, where to transfer.
- Arrival times, which are a genuinely hard prediction problem and Google is very good at it.
- Discovering a route you do not already know.
- It is free, and you already have it.
If your problem is "I do not know how to get there", Maps is the answer and no alarm app competes.
What a proximity alarm is better at
If your problem is "I know exactly where I am going and I keep sleeping past it", the requirements are different:

The last two rows are the honest cost. A proximity alarm has no idea what vehicle you are on, what the timetable says, or when you will arrive. It knows one thing exactly: how far your phone is from a point you chose. That is a narrower claim, and it is a claim that stays true in a tunnel.
The practical answer
Use both. Use Maps to work out the route on a journey you do not know. Use a proximity alarm as the thing that actually wakes you, on any journey where sleeping through the stop is a real possibility.
They are not really competitors. One of them is a map. The other is an alarm clock that happens to be triggered by distance instead of time.
What Stopzone does
